 Falkirk Writers Circle

The Falkirk Writers Circle was founded in 1982 and has been meeting at the Hub every Tuesday since then—over 40 years! In the early '80s, Falkirk had a vibrant arts scene, and the circle formed many collaborations during that time. One notable collaboration is with the Falkirk Camera Club, which has proven to be a successful and long-lasting partnership. This collaboration is currently celebrated in an exhibition at Calendar House, featured in the Falkirk Herald on February 9, 2026.

The Writers Circle also regularly contributes to the Falkirk Herald's district roundup pages, sharing updates about Tuesday nights at the Hub. Over the years, these meetings have welcomed an incredible array of renowned authors, journalists, poets, scriptwriters, and historians. These guests also serve as judges for the year-round competitions at the Hub. We at the Hub are very proud of our Writers Circle. They have been a supportive group, standing by us through our most challenging times.

An annual event, “Talking Pictures,” is scheduled for April 9, 2026. This collaboration between the Writers Circle and Falkirk Camera Club involves Camera Club members providing photographs, while Circle members create poetry and prose inspired by those images. The event culminates in a performance evening where the photographs are screened, and Circle members read their works alongside the relevant images.

On May 16, 2026, the Circle will host its annual seminar at the Hub, attracting talented writers from all over Scotland to enter various competitions.

On May 13, 2026, the Circle will hold a "Words & Music" evening, showcasing members performing their own work interspersed with live music. This event has proven very popular. When Falkirk had a robust arts network, the Writers Circle established connections with various creative groups across the country, some of which have remained to this day.

"Words & Music" began in the mid to late 1980s as part of the Falkirk Tryst Festival, which was vibrant at the time, with many local organisations participating. This event was originally a collaboration with the Chapter Four folk group, fronted by Falkirk's most revered historian, Ian Scott, who provided musical accompaniment for several years. For variety, the Circle has featured various singers and bands, always aiming to include local musicians. For the past three years, the event has featured Hurroosh or a combination of Hurroosh and its friends. This year marks the fourth time the event will be held at St. Xavier Hall.

In the beginning, the Circle would invite professional poets to perform their own work. Liz Lochhead performed at the first "Words & Music" event, followed by Norman MacCaig at another. These prominent names attracted a larger audience, but the Circle decided years ago that they were good enough to have only FWC members perform the poetry portion of the evening.
